A Bit of English

Putting "English" on the ball is the traditional way one attempts to control the path and destiny of a particular ball -- with no visible links between the ball and whoever is putting on the English.  Of course, it's hard to put on the English; they so often seem either so clueless, or simply oblivious to the mutterings of -- from their point of view -- inferior beings.  Which is something of a problem.

Perhaps, a better explanation of the idea of putting "English" on... is not limiting it to balls.  Perhaps, the English have been manipulating its former colonies without recourse to visible links between the English and all the poor souls it controls.
